The scourge of the damp towel: mold and mildew

Have you ever forgotten to dry a damp towel before discovering that mold or mildew has taken over? Particularly when kept in a dark area for a long time, damp towels create the ideal habitat for mold to thrive. College dorm rooms may turn into incubators for mold colonies, complete with the stink of dirty socks from the laundry hamper. Mold flourishes in locations like restrooms or pool houses where there is frequently no outside light or air movement. While the “gross factor” of mold and mildew is enough to cause worry, unchecked mold also poses significant health risks.

But what precisely is mold? It is a kind of fungus that thrives in dim, moist environments both indoors and outside. There are hundreds of different types of mold, and the majority of them produce small spores into the air that, when inhaled, can result in a number of ailments because mycotoxins are present. This is why homeowners, especially those who suffer from respiratory conditions like asthma, are so concerned about mold. Additional signs and symptoms brought on by exposure to mold mycotoxins include:

• Mold signs
• Throat pains, wheezing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and headaches
• Nasal obstruction, Coughing,Sneezing, watery, itchy, and red eyes
• Asthma attacks or symptoms resembling asthma, Bronchitis, chronic sinusitis, and pneumonia (sinus infections)
• Hives, skin rashes, Fatigue,Depression, low immunological response

So, what can you do if you have a mold issue? To find mold growths and stop them at the source, you may need to contact specialists, depending on the severity of your condition. Washing garments or linens in ammonia or with other fungicidal chemicals is another common home remedy. The simplest approach to combat mold breakouts is to stop it from starting in the first place. Avoid letting moisture build up indoors, especially in darker spaces like bathrooms, attics, or basements. Hang up your clothes and towels in locations with good ventilation or in the sun. You may also use a Bathvo heated towel rack to ensure that your towels stay warm, dry, and mold/mildew free if you don’t have the space to air-dry garments, as in a dorm room or tiny apartment.

So keep in mind you could be letting some unwelcome green visitors into your house the next time you leave your old towel crumpled in a heap on the floor.
